Elling Reitan erfødt i Trondheim 1949. Er medlem av Norske Bildende Kunstnere/Trøndelag Bildende Kunstnere. Utdannet cand. phil i tysk og engelsk med Masteroppgave "The Grotesque in Shakespeare's Tragedies". Elling Reitan er elev av Odd Nerdrum og Bjørn Sverrbo og han har Jens Johannessen som mentor. Han tilegner Jens Johannesen sin.

Det var ikke før i en alder av 33 år Reitan begynte å male for alvor, og det tok faktisk flere år før han valgte å bli kunstner på heltid. Først studerte han Litteraturhistorie og filosofi ved universitetet i Oslo og Trondheim.
